Economy: Oman is a middle-income economy heavily dependent on dwindling oil resources.  However, high oil prices over recent years have helped build Oman’s budget, trade surpluses, and foreign reserves.  Oman joined the World Trade Organisation in November 2000 and continues to liberalise its markets.  The country ratified a free trade agreement with the United States in September 2006, and through the Gulf Cooperation Council, seeks similar agreements with the European Union, China, and Japan.  Industrial development plans focus on gas resources, metal manufacturing, petrochemicals, and international transshipment.
